Appliance Broke Today? Do These First
- Smell gas? Leave the house and call your gas utility from outside. Do not switch anything on or off.
- Water leaking? Shut off the water supply valve to the appliance, then unplug it if you can do so safely.
- Burning smell, sparks or smoke? Switch off the breaker if it is safe to reach. Call 911 if there is fire.
- Fridge warm? Keep the doors closed. The FDA says an unopened fridge keeps food cold for about four hours, and advises 40°F or below for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer.
- Nothing works? Check the breaker and the outlet. Electric dryers and ranges need both legs of a 240V circuit.
