City rules and fees
- Bulk trash does not take large appliances that use refrigerants, such as freezers, refrigerators and air conditioners. Bulk piles are limited to ten cubic yards. (City of Phoenix Public Works: Bulk Trash)
- Scheduled curbside appliance pickup: up to five non-refrigerant appliances (dishwashers, dryers, microwaves, stoves, washers, water heaters, evaporative coolers) for $30; refrigerant appliances $25 per item. Fees go on your city services bill. (City of Phoenix Public Works: Appliance Recycling)
- Refrigerators and freezers must have attached doors, hinges, lids, glass shelves and latches removed before pickup (A.R.S. 36-1651). Call the Public Works Customer Care Center at (602) 262-6251. (City of Phoenix Public Works: Appliance Recycling)
- Transfer station drop-off: residential solid waste customers may drop off one refrigerant appliance (fridge, freezer or air conditioner) a year free at a City transfer station, and up to 1 ton of non-refrigerant appliances per month at no cost. (City of Phoenix Public Works: Appliance Recycling)
- After the free refrigerant appliance, a $20 environmental fee per Freon appliance applies, plus disposal fees of $55 per ton (minimum $40), unless the Freon was properly removed and you bring a certificate of removal to the scale house. (City of Phoenix Public Works: Appliance Recycling)
Federal refrigerant rule
- The final disposer of an appliance is responsible for making sure any refrigerant in it is recovered. If someone else recovered it first, EPA requires a signed statement with that person's name and address and the date of recovery. EPA says no sticker is required for disposal. (U.S. EPA: Appliance Disposal (Section 608))
Before you haul it
- Empty fridges and freezers completely.
- Check whether the program wants fridge or freezer doors removed, taped shut or left on. Rules differ by city; some reject taped doors.
- Unplug the appliance. On a gas range or dryer, have the gas line shut off and capped by a qualified person before moving it.
- Call ahead: fees and rules change, and the official pages are the final word.
