How to get rid of an old fridge, freezer, washer, dryer or range in Scottsdale, from official city pages checked November 1, 2026. Scottsdale population: 243,006 (U.S. Census Bureau estimate, July 1, 2025).
City rules and fees
- Appliance collection is only for Scottsdale residents with City solid waste accounts. It runs once a month, on the last Thursday, for washers, dryers, stoves, ovens, microwaves, water heaters, dishwashers, refrigerators and freezers. (City of Scottsdale Solid Waste: Boxes and Appliance Collection)
- Refrigerators and freezers will not be collected unless the compressor has been removed and the Freon recovered by a certified technician. The City points residents to a local HVAC or A/C technician for Freon removal. (City of Scottsdale Solid Waste: Boxes and Appliance Collection)
- Refrigerators and freezers must have the doors, hinges, lids and latches removed. City facilities are not drop-off sites for appliances. (City of Scottsdale Solid Waste: Boxes and Appliance Collection)
- The appliance collection page does not list a fee. Solid Waste: 480-312-5600. (City of Scottsdale Solid Waste: Boxes and Appliance Collection)
Official sources differ: The statute Scottsdale cites for Freon removal
- Scottsdale's appliance page says fridges and freezers are not collected unless a certified technician has recovered the Freon, "in accordance with Arizona Revised Statutes 36-1651". (City of Scottsdale Solid Waste: Boxes and Appliance Collection, checked November 1, 2026)
- The text of A.R.S. 36-1651 that we read covers removing the doors, hinges, lids or latches of an unused refrigerator or freezer left where children can reach it. We found no Freon rule in it. (Arizona Legislature: A.R.S. 36-1651, Abandoned refrigerators, checked October 31, 2026)
Who to call: The City rule is what decides whether your fridge gets picked up, so follow it. Call Scottsdale Solid Waste at 480-312-5600 with questions.
Federal refrigerant rule
- The final disposer of an appliance is responsible for making sure any refrigerant in it is recovered. If someone else recovered it first, EPA requires a signed statement with that person's name and address and the date of recovery. EPA says no sticker is required for disposal. (U.S. EPA: Appliance Disposal (Section 608))
Before you haul it
- Empty fridges and freezers completely.
- Check whether the program wants fridge or freezer doors removed, taped shut or left on. Rules differ by city; some reject taped doors.
- Unplug the appliance. On a gas range or dryer, have the gas line shut off and capped by a qualified person before moving it.
- Call ahead: fees and rules change, and the official pages are the final word.
